Silver Price Today: Why It Moves Differently From Gold

Silver gets treated as gold's cheaper cousin, and the comparison does it no favours. It is priced differently, demanded for different reasons, and it moves with a violence gold rarely shows. If you have ever wondered why a silver rate can jump several per cent on a day gold barely twitched, the answer is in what silver is actually used for.

Quick answer

Silver in India is quoted per kilogram rather than per 10 grams, and roughly half of global silver demand is industrial — electronics, solar photovoltaics, brazing and medical uses — alongside jewellery and investment demand. That industrial exposure, combined with a much smaller total market size, makes silver considerably more volatile than gold in percentage terms. This is general information, not investment advice.

Silver's dual nature

Gold is overwhelmingly a monetary and ornamental metal. Its demand comes from jewellery, investment holdings and central bank reserves, and its industrial use is comparatively minor. Silver is genuinely two things at once: a precious metal held for the same reasons as gold, and an industrial input consumed in manufacturing.

That second role is substantial. Silver is the best electrical and thermal conductor among metals, which makes it hard to substitute in electronics, solar photovoltaic cells, brazing alloys, batteries and a range of medical applications. Much of it is consumed rather than stored, which is a fundamentally different demand profile from gold.

The consequence is that silver responds to inputs gold ignores. Manufacturing cycles, solar installation rates and electronics demand all feed into it. When those pull in the same direction as precious-metal sentiment, moves are amplified; when they conflict, silver can go one way while gold goes the other.

This page explains how gold and silver rates are put together and where to verify them. It is general information for readers in India, not investment advice, not a price forecast and not a recommendation to buy or sell. Speak to a qualified adviser before committing money to any asset.

Why silver swings harder

Two structural facts explain most of silver's volatility. The first is the dual demand base above. The second is size: the total value of the silver market is a small fraction of gold's, so the same amount of money entering or leaving moves the price a great deal further in percentage terms.

This is a mechanical effect, not a judgement about the metal. A smaller market is simply more sensitive to flow. It means the daily percentage range in silver is routinely wider than gold's, and it means a silver quote goes stale faster.

For anyone checking a rate, the practical implication is about freshness rather than strategy. A gold rate from this morning is roughly indicative this afternoon. A silver rate from last week may be a long way from today's.

The gold-silver ratio

The gold-silver ratio is simply the price of one ounce of gold divided by the price of one ounce of silver — how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold would buy. It is one of the oldest quoted relationships in commodities and it is watched closely by traders.

Historically the ratio has ranged widely, and it is often discussed as though it must return to some long-run average. That reasoning should be handled with care. The ratio was fixed by statute in various monetary systems in the past, which is why old figures are quoted; in a market with no such fixing, and with silver's industrial demand changing over decades, there is no mechanical reason a historical level must reassert itself.

Treat the ratio as a descriptive statistic that tells you how the two metals have moved relative to each other. It is not a signal, and this page draws no conclusion from it.

Buying silver in India

The retail build-up mirrors gold: international price, currency conversion, import duty, GST, then fabrication costs for anything worked into an object. Silver articles — utensils, idols, coins, jewellery — carry making charges just as gold does, and on lower-value items those charges can be a much larger proportion of the total.

Purity is expressed differently. Sterling silver is 92.5 per cent, marked 925, and higher purities are used for coins and bars. As with gold, hallmarking is the mechanism for verifying a purity claim, and it is worth asking for.

Because silver is far cheaper per unit weight, the absolute rupee difference between two quotes can look small while the percentage difference is large. Compare proportionally, and get the components itemised.

  • Confirm the unit — silver is quoted per kilogram in India, not per 10 grams.
  • Confirm the purity and ask for the hallmark; 925 is sterling.
  • Ask for making charges separately, especially on low-value articles where they dominate.
  • Check the timestamp on any rate — silver quotes go stale faster than gold ones.
  • Verify against IBJA or MCX rather than a forwarded image.

No forecast, from us or anyone

This page explains what drives silver. It does not say where silver is going, and it will not. Commodity prices are the product of global flows that no consumer-facing page can forecast, and the confident predictions that circulate around precious metals are, without exception, either speculation or a sales pitch.

The specific risk with silver is that its volatility makes dramatic content easy to write. A metal that can move several per cent in a session generates headlines in both directions, and those headlines are designed to be clicked rather than to be right.

Read the mechanism, check the rate at the source, and take any decision about money to a qualified adviser. That is the whole of the responsible position here.

Frequently asked questions

Why is silver more volatile than gold?+

Two reasons. A large share of silver demand is industrial, so it reacts to manufacturing and technology cycles that barely affect gold. And the silver market is much smaller by value, so the same flow of money moves the price further in percentage terms.

How is silver quoted in India?+

Per kilogram, unlike gold which is quoted per 10 grams. International markets quote both in US dollars per troy ounce, so any comparison needs the units aligned first.

What is the gold-silver ratio?+

It is the price of an ounce of gold divided by the price of an ounce of silver — how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold would buy. It is a descriptive statistic showing relative movement, not a trading signal, and this page draws no conclusion from it.

What is silver actually used for?+

Alongside jewellery, coins and investment holdings, silver is used heavily in industry because it is the best electrical and thermal conductor among metals — electronics, solar photovoltaic cells, brazing alloys, batteries and medical applications.

What does 925 mean on silver?+

It marks sterling silver, which is 92.5 per cent pure silver with the remainder alloy for durability. Higher purities are used for coins and bars. As with gold, hallmarking is the mechanism for verifying a purity claim.

Where should I check today's silver rate?+

Use the India Bullion and Jewellers Association benchmark or publicly visible MCX futures prices as a reference, and check the timestamp. Silver rates go stale faster than gold rates, so a quote from last week is not a useful reference point.

Is silver a good buy right now?+

We do not answer that. This page describes the mechanism that moves silver; it does not forecast prices or recommend buying or selling. Take any decision about money to a qualified financial adviser.
